On February 18, 2007, YEAR OF THE PIG will begin…

St. Clair Superior Development Corporation will turn the neighborhood streets into a forum for public art, creativity and innovation

St. Clair Superior Development Corporation (SCSDC) welcomes the 2007 Year of the Pig celebration to the St. Clair Superior neighborhood! This is a public art exhibition that places fiberglass pig sculptures, designed by Viktor Schreckengost and decorated by local artists, throughout St. Clair Superior businesses for the public to view and interact with. vspig_thumb

To make each pig sculpture a unique work of art, each artist is challenged and inspired by cultural influences, their personal history, and their own interpretation of the pig as an object of art. The goal of the sculptures is to promote the buy into AsiaTown plan, and to raise money for our branding program.

143 design proposals were received.  Of those, 58 were chosen by a Selection Committee to present to sponsors.  45 individual artists from throughout the region are represented.

The pig sculptures will be placed throughout the neighborhood the week following Memorial Day.  The sculptures will remain on public display until the week before Labor Day.

“Viktor Schreckengost’s work will attract visitors from around the region. While in St. Clair Superior, we hope they will support our local businesses and find reasons to come back,” said Jamie Blackson Baker, Executive Director of SCSDC.

Known as “America’s Da Vinci,” Mr. Schreckengost, is a recipient of the National Medal of Arts honoring his lifelong achievements. Mr. Schreckengost designed the first mass-produced American dinnerware, the first cab-over-engine truck and the first affordable children's pedal-driven cars. In addition, Mr. Schreckengost founded the Cleveland Institute of Art's school of industrial design.

“Mr. Schreckengost is honored to be able to work with SCSDC on a project that celebrates Cleveland’s culture and highlights the St. Clair-Superior area. From the Cleveland Zoo’s buildings and capturing the city in watercolor to the O’Neil Mounted Police Monument and his work on the Cleveland Fine Arts Advisory Committee, Viktor Schreckengost is a central figure in Cleveland’s history. Dad’s work on this project continues that tradition,” said Chip Nowacek, Executive Director of the Viktor Schreckengost Foundation.
