Windows Public Art at Sterling Recreation Center & Park

If you happen to be visiting your local recreation center, or driving down
E. 31st street, be sure to stop and take a closer look at the creation made by our youth.

The sculpture is entitled “Windows,” and is a permanent public art installation at the Sterling Recreation Center Park. The outdoor sculpture was created through a community art initiative by students at Case Elementary School, artist Melissa Daubert & St Clair Superior Development Corporation.  It is also complemented by topiaries sculpted by students in the Goodrich-Gannett Neighborhood Center’s after-school program.

Funded by Cuyahoga Arts & Culture and St. Clair Superior Development Corporation, “Windows” is an 8-foot high peak-roofed structure resembling a house.  The house’s 48 windows are works of art on tile depicting the lives of 48 Case Elementary School students; the tiles feature mixed media collages reflecting their visions of themselves, their families and their community.

With the help of Case Elementary teachers, experience artist Melissa Daubert led students through a series of weekly classes to create their tiles, involving the students in every step of the creative process.  Students assembled collages using photographs, cut paper, colored pencil and fabric. The collages were then digitally photographed and turned into ceramic transfer decals.  The decals were kiln-fired onto porcelain tiles which were then affixed to the structure. Through hands-on interaction, artist and students learned art, science, math, architecture and teamwork.

A collaboration of youth of different ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds, “Windows” symbolizes the celebration of diversity and the unifying power of public art.  The project reflects the efforts of an entire neighborhood and, for the student-artists, is a unique, personal contribution to a lasting legacy for their community.
